Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of therapy?

290 Therapy provides comprehensive counseling services that benefit mental, emotional, social, and spiritual wellbeing. Individual and group therapy services provide space to discuss past traumas, childhood experiences, current stressors, and anxieties about the future.

Therapy helps to improve communication skills, understand mental and emotional stressors, develop insight on life, and can help you find ways to cope with mental health diagnoses such as anxiety, depression, psychosis, or personality disorders. Research also shows that there physical health benefits to engaging in therapy. Your mental health is intertwined with your physical health and social wellbeing—therefore, 290 Therapy uses a Bio-Psycho-Social model to understand all aspects of each client to provide a tailored made service.

How do I choose the right therapist?

When looking for the right therapist, the first thing you want to do is check a person’s credentials to ensure that they are providing you with clinical services. There’s a lot of advice being offered right now but it’s important to meet with someone who has educational and career experience to provide you with ethical and evidence-based services. Consider meeting with a licensed psychologist, licensed counselor (LCPC), licensed social worker (LCSW), or licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT).

Once you find a counselor with the right credentials, consider the issues that you would like to discuss in counseling. Choose a counselor who has experience working with the issues or disorders that you want to discuss. Finally, choose a therapist who has experience working with individuals with your shared identities. A culturally competent therapist is essential to receiving services that meet your needs.

How long do I have to stay in therapy?

Once you begin therapy, you and your counselor work together to establish goals for treatment. Once the goals are met, you and your therapist can agree to terminate. If new issues arise, you and your therapist can work together to develop a new treatment plan. If for any reason, you decide that you no longer wish to attend therapy, let your counselor know so that your file can be closed. This will allow space for other clients to be seen.
