Tyra Steverson, MA, LCPC, NCC
Hey, I’m Tyra
I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and the founder of 290 Therapy. I am also a mother, a partner, a sister, a daughter, and a friend. I am from Chicago, I have called several parts of Illinois home, and I now split my work between Illinois and Texas.
I say all of that first because I do not think you can separate a therapist from the person she is. The way I work comes out of my training, and it also comes out of my own life, my own healing, and my own return to myself.
Why I Do This Work
I started 290 Therapy because I kept meeting women who were holding everything and being asked, quietly, to hold a little more.
Women who were good at their jobs and good to their families and completely disconnected from themselves. Women who had been in therapy before and spent most of it translating. Women who had never gone at all, because nobody in their family did, or because the one time they reached out they did not feel understood.
I wanted to build a place where a Black woman could walk in and start at the middle of the conversation instead of the beginning. Where the context is already understood, so we can get to the actual work.
How I Work
My approach is rooted in connection, community, and care. I draw from psychodynamic therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, narrative therapy, and Black feminist psychology, which in practice means we look at where your patterns started, build real skills for right now, and hold all of it inside your full context.
Clients often describe me as warm, real, and grounded. I am not going to sit across from you performing neutrality. I bring my whole self into the room, and I want the same from you.
I will not ask you to shrink, explain away, or compartmentalize your experience. You do not have to arrive with the right language or a tidy version of what is wrong.
