Online Burnout Therapy for Black Women

Do you sit in the car in the driveway for a few extra minutes before you go inside?

Does Sunday evening come with a heaviness you can feel in your chest?

Did you finally take the vacation, only to come home just as tired as when you left?

Maybe you're the strong one. The one who keeps showing up, keeps saying yes, keeps everything running. And somewhere along the way you became tired in a way sleep does not fix.

Burnout therapy is a place to stop pushing through long enough to look at what you're carrying. I offer burnout therapy for Black women in Texas and Illinois, online by secure video.

You don't have to keep carrying this by yourself.

Tired in a Way Sleep Does Not Fix

Burnout rarely arrives all at once. It builds slowly, while you're busy being dependable.

What Burnout Can Look Like

  • Exhaustion that rest doesn't touch

  • Irritability, or feeling numb

  • Pulling away from work, friends, or the people you love

  • Feeling like nothing you do is ever enough

  • Trouble switching off, even when the work is done

  • Saying yes when your body is saying no

  • Dreading things that used to matter to you

None of this is a character flaw or a lack of discipline. It's often what happens when someone carries more than anyone could sustain, for longer than anyone should have to. Exhaustion can have physical causes too, so it's worth checking in with your doctor as well.

Why So Many Black Women Burn Out

So many of us were raised to absorb. To be steady when things are not steady. To be the one everyone calls, at work, at home, at church, in the family group chat. To make it look easy.

That expectation doesn't leave much room to be tired. So you keep going, and the cost builds quietly. Sometimes burnout grows out of stress that has been in your body for years, which is part of why it can feel so deep. Trauma therapy can be part of that work too.

I've written about burnout as a sign of something underneath, the ways we abandon ourselves to keep everything else running. You can read more in Burnout Might Not Be Your Problem.

Burnout Isn't Only About Work

The formal definition of burnout is about work. But many women describe the same depletion from motherhood, from caring for aging parents, and from being the one everyone leans on. Whatever is wearing you down, it is welcome here.

Burnout, Depression, or Anxiety?

You don't need the right label before you reach out. Burnout is often tied to what you're carrying, and it may ease as the load and the patterns change. Depression can follow you into every part of life and can bring a low mood that doesn't lift, hopelessness, or losing interest in most things. The two can overlap, and anxiety often comes along with them.

We'll sort it out together in the consultation and our early sessions. You can also read about depression therapy and anxiety therapy.

How Burnout Therapy Can Help You Come Home to Yourself

The goal is not a better system for managing an unsustainable load, or becoming more efficient at your own exhaustion. In our work together, we can:

  • Understand what's fueling the exhaustion, inside you, at home, and at work

  • Practice boundaries you can hold without drowning in guilt

  • Learn to rest, and to receive, without needing to earn it

  • Rebuild trust in what you need and what you want

You don't have to hit a crisis first to deserve support.

What You Can Expect in Our Sessions

My first goal is for you to feel safe enough to be honest. Not polished. Honest. Early on, I'll want to understand what's happening right now, what's been happening for a long time, and what you want to feel different.

How I Work

My approach is informed by psychodynamic therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), narrative therapy, and Black feminist psychology. In practice, that means we look at where your patterns started, build real skills for right now, and hold all of it inside your full context. Meet Tyra.

Frequently Asked Questions About Burnout Therapy

What is burnout therapy?

Burnout therapy is talk therapy that focuses on the exhaustion, detachment, and overfunctioning that build up when you carry more than you can sustain. Together we look at your patterns, your boundaries, your rest, and your trust in yourself.

How do I know if I'm burned out or depressed?

You don't have to figure that out alone, and the two often overlap. If a low mood, hopelessness, or losing interest shows up in most parts of your life, tell me in the consultation so we can look at it together. If you're having thoughts of not wanting to be here, please don't wait for a consultation. Call or text 988 any time, or call 911 if you are in immediate danger.

Does insurance cover burnout therapy?

Burnout on its own usually isn't a diagnosis that insurance pays for. Insurance covers therapy when there's a diagnosis that truly fits what you're experiencing, and coverage depends on your plan. We'll talk it through in the consultation. If you use insurance, what you pay depends on your plan. See Insurance and Rates.

Do I have to quit my job to recover from burnout?

Not necessarily. Sometimes the work is changing how you carry the role, setting limits, or taking time to decide what you want next. You stay in charge of those decisions.

How long does burnout therapy take?

It depends on what you're carrying, and we decide the pace together. Some women come for a focused season. Others stay longer and go deeper.

Can I do burnout therapy online if I live in Texas or Illinois?

Yes. All sessions are online by secure video, and you need to be physically located in Texas or Illinois at the time of each session. I'm a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) in Illinois and a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Texas.

You Don't Have to Keep Being the Strong One Alone

If you're thinking, "I don't even have time for therapy," I hear you. Sessions are online, so there's no drive to add to your day. You can join from wherever you can find a door that closes.

In the free 15-minute consultation, we'll talk about what's bringing you here and whether working together makes sense. If you’re located in Texas or Illinois, you can pick a time that works for you through my secure client portal.
