Online Depression Therapy for Black Women
Do you get through the whole day, do everything that's asked of you, and still feel like you're watching your life from the outside?
Do the things you used to enjoy feel flat, like they belong to someone else?
Does everyone think you're doing fine, because you've gotten so good at looking fine?
Depression doesn't always look like staying in bed. For a lot of the women I work with, it looks like showing up, keeping up, and quietly running on empty. You might not even call it depression. You might just say you're heavy, numb, or not yourself.
I offer depression therapy for Black women in Texas and Illinois, online by secure video. You don't have to keep hiding how hard this is.

Depression Can Hide Behind Getting Things Done
What Depression Can Look Like
A low or heavy mood that doesn't lift
Feeling numb, empty, or disconnected
Losing interest in things that used to matter
Sleeping much more or much less than usual
Feeling tired, even when you've rested
Being hard on yourself, or feeling like a burden
Pulling away from people while acting like everything is fine
This list can't diagnose you. Only a licensed professional can do that, after a full assessment. If several of these sound familiar, that's a good reason to talk with someone. Some physical health conditions can cause similar symptoms, so a check-up with your doctor can help too.
Why It's Hard to Say Out Loud
Many Black women grew up hearing that we don't get to fall apart. That we pray it away, push through it, or keep it in the house. Some of us learned that needing help means being weak, or that other people have it worse.
So you keep it to yourself and keep going. But carrying depression in silence doesn't make it lighter. Asking for support doesn't mean you've failed. It means you're taking yourself seriously. Why Strong Black Women Struggle to Ask for Help
Depression or Burnout?
They can feel alike, and they can overlap. Burnout is often tied to what you're carrying, and it may ease as the load changes. Depression can follow you into every part of life. You don't have to sort out the label first. We'll look at it together. Read more about burnout therapy.
How Depression Therapy Can Help
Therapy is a place to stop performing okay. In our work together, we can:
Name what you're feeling without shame
Understand where the heaviness comes from, now and in your history
Build small, doable steps for the hardest days
Notice the harsh inner voice, and practice answering it differently
Reconnect with people, rest, and the things that feel like you
We go at a pace you set.

How I Work
My approach is informed by psychodynamic therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), narrative therapy, and Black feminist psychology. In practice, that means we look at where your patterns started, build real skills for right now, and hold all of it inside your full context. All sessions are online by secure video, and you need to be physically located in Texas or Illinois at the time of each session. I'm a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) in Illinois and a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Texas. Meet Tyra
FAQs About Depression Therapy
What if I can still function? Do I really need therapy?
You don't have to fall apart to deserve support. Many women keep functioning while they're struggling, and that is often what makes it so exhausting.
Do you prescribe medication?
No. Counselors like me don't prescribe medication. Medication is prescribed by medical providers such as psychiatrists, primary care doctors, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants, and in some states by specially trained psychologists. If you're interested in medication, talk with your doctor or a psychiatric provider. I can coordinate with your prescriber when you'd like, with your written permission, and therapy can work alongside that care.
Does insurance cover depression therapy?
Coverage depends on your plan. I accept several plans directly and more through Headway, and if you use insurance, what you pay depends on your plan. See Insurance and Rates.
How long does depression therapy take?
It depends on what you're carrying, and we decide the pace together. Some women come for a focused season, and others stay longer and go deeper.
What if I'm having thoughts of not wanting to be here?
