Online Grief Therapy for Black Women

Did you go back to work, back to the kids, and back to taking care of everyone, before you ever had a chance to fall apart?

Are you the one who planned the service, fed the family, and made the calls, and now that everyone has gone home, you're left with the quiet?

Does it feel like people expect you to be over it by now?

Grief has no schedule. It can follow the death of a parent, a child, a partner, or a friend. It can follow a pregnancy loss, a divorce, a diagnosis, or the end of a life you thought you'd have. And when you're the strong one, there's often no room to grieve at all.

I offer grief therapy for Black women in Texas and Illinois, online by secure video. Your grief deserves room.

Grief Doesn't Follow the Rules

What Grief Can Look Like

  • Waves of sadness that come out of nowhere

  • Feeling numb, or feeling nothing when you think you should

  • Anger, guilt, or relief, and then guilt about the relief

  • Trouble sleeping, eating, or focusing

  • Replaying the last conversation, the last visit, the last day

  • Feeling like you're the only one still carrying it

There is no right way to grieve, and no deadline for it.

Grief and the Strong One

So many Black women are the ones who hold the family together after a loss. We plan, we cook, we comfort, and we keep the household running. Faith and community can be a deep source of comfort, and sometimes the message to "stay strong" also leaves no space for what you feel.

You're allowed to grieve and still believe. You're allowed to need support even while you're supporting everyone else.

Losses That Don't Always Get Named

Some losses come without a funeral or a casserole at the door. A miscarriage or pregnancy loss. A fertility journey that didn't go the way you hoped. A relationship that ended. A parent who is still living but no longer the person they were. The version of your life you planned.

These losses are real, and they belong here too. If your grief is connected to pregnancy or fertility, fertility and pregnancy therapy may also help.

How Grief Therapy Can Help

Therapy won't rush you or ask you to "move on." In our work together, we can:

  • Make space to say what you haven't been able to say

  • Hold the love and the loss together

  • Work through guilt, regret, and the conversations that never got to happen

  • Find ways to carry your person or your loss with you

  • Notice when grief is mixing with exhaustion or depression, and care for that too

We go at your pace.

How I Work

My approach is informed by psychodynamic therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), narrative therapy, and Black feminist psychology. All sessions are online by secure video, so you don't have to get dressed and drive anywhere on the hard days. You need to be physically located in Texas or Illinois at the time of each session. I'm a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) in Illinois and a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Texas. Meet Tyra

FAQs About Grief Therapy

How long does grief last?

There's no set timeline for grief. It often changes shape over time, and many people find it comes in waves, especially around anniversaries and holidays.

Is it too soon, or too late, to start grief therapy?

It's never too soon or too late. Whether your loss was last month or many years ago, you can start whenever you're ready.

What if my loss wasn't a death?

Grief therapy is for any loss that matters to you, including a pregnancy loss, a divorce, an estrangement, or a life that changed in ways you didn't choose.

Is grief the same as depression?

Not always, though they can overlap. If you're not sure what you're feeling, we'll look at it together, and you can read more about depression therapy.

Do you offer grief support groups?

No. I work with adults one on one and don't offer group, couples, or family sessions.

You Don't Have to Grieve Alone

In a free 15-minute consultation, we'll talk about your loss and whether working together makes sense. If you’re located in Texas or Illinois, you can pick a time that works for you through my secure client portal.
